"When we upgraded the fire detection system at Plas Caerdeon, a bat survey
confirmed that the roof space of the Stables Annex was home to a thriving maternity
roost of lesser horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros), a protected species.
The project required careful planning, licensing from Natural Resources Wales, and
close coordination between ecologists, contractors and installers to ensure minimal
disturbance to the bats. Recognising the educational value of the bats, we chose to
install a night-vision CCTV system to enable future observation and study."
